School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science

Rupal Vaja, School Manager

Tell us about your work? As School Manager, my work is very varied and wide ranging. I am responsible for managing and overseeing many aspects of the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science from the buildings to the staff, to making sure all teaching and research activities are running smoothly, to budget planning and keeping the line of communication with the faculty open. I need to have a helicopter view of everything going on so it’s a challenging but rewarding role.

Tell us how you got into EECS? I started working in the school in 2006 when my role at that time was postgraduate administrator, looking after MSc applications. In 2012, I was promoted to Teaching Services manager, looking after undergraduate and postgraduate provision of our curriculum. In 2018, I had the opportunity to be seconded to the School Manager role and was pleased to take on the role permanently in 2019.

What brought you to Queen Mary? After graduating from University in 2000, I secured a role as a HR assistant at Queen Mary and I have been here ever since!

What’s the best thing about your work? I enjoy working with people and I enjoy the broad spectum of the job. I'm always dealing with a huge variety of issues at one time - from HR to planning, facilties management to finance - to so it's never boring and it keeps me active.

When you're not at EECS, what do you enjoy doing? I enjoy spending time with my family. I have two sons who are grown up now so have more time to enjoy keeping fit and healthy. Being able to go to the gym releases a lot of stress! I enjoy travelling and cooking, all of things give me a chance to relax outside of work hours!
