Inter/sections is a week-long, annual event organised by the students in the Media and Arts Technology Centre for Doctoral Training at Queen Mary University of London. Inter/sections 2017 is taking place from 3-8 September, at the Mile End Art Pavilion in East London.
This year’s theme is Politics and Ethics in Media and Arts Technology. We will explore this theme through a week-long programme of workshops, talks, events, and an exhibition featuring new commissions by Will Hurt and Yosuke Ushigome alongside interactive artworks.
Inter/sections culminates in a Symposium on Friday 8 September. This is a day-long event for discussion and exchange between academia, industry and activists. Featuring keynote speakers who are experts in emerging trends in science and media, lightning talks, a workshop from the The Culture Capital Exchange (Technology, Ethics and the Arts Now) and a panel talk on Work Ethics in the Age of Automation, the Inter/sections Symposium creates a space to debate new ethical frameworks for emerging technologies.
Attendance is free, but booking is essential as lunch and a reception will be provided.
Dr Stephen Minger, expert in stem cell technology. Stephen is actively involved with the UK Department of Health and with the Minister for Public Health in the consultation with both Houses of Parliament that led to the passage of the Human Embryo Bill of 2009 and the inclusion of new forms of animal-human embryos within primary legislation.
Dr Dan McQuillan, lecturer in Creative & Social Computing at Goldsmiths College, University of London. Before becoming an academic, Dan was Director of E-communications for Amnesty International, Head of Digital for Make Your Mark, and Head of Digital for Media for Development. Dan is the co-founder of Social Innovation Camp and the science & technical lead for the citizen science project Science for Change Kosovo.
