Antennas Group Academic wins Royal Academy of Engineering Industrial Secondment to work with NPL

During the secondment, which is planned for April to November 2014, Dr Alomainy will work on improving and creating new techniques to develop traceable and cost-effective measurement solutions for characterising the performance of wireless body-worn devices to aid development of on-body antenna systems. In addition, an essential aim of the secondment is to develop a set of resources used in teaching and student’s project placements of advanced experimental techniques used in assessing wearable radio devices performance in general communication electronics and hence feed into state-of-the-art teaching and learning in QMUL.

The industrial host: NPL
NPL is the UK’s National Measurement Institute, and is a world-leading centre of excellence in developing and applying the most accurate measurement standards, science and technology available. NPL possesses RF to optical links to remove cable effects, which are the main obstacles in accurate characterisation of body worn sensors or antennas. In addition, they are currently liaising with heavy-duty positioner supplier for establishing facilities that enable the performance of 3D radiation pattern assessment of body-worn devices incorporating physical body phantom on which my expertise will be consulted and applied. NPL has been awarded continuously for their scientific, industrial and business oriented initiatives such as MTA Manufacturing Industry Awards 2012, Go Green Richmond Upon Thames - Advanced Award and Institute for Education Business Excellence (IEBE) Business Awards 2010.
