Profile

Professor Anthony Brown is Professor of Radiative Electromangetics at Queen Mary, University of London,  Professor Emeritus at the University of Manchester and a visiting academic at the Cavendish Laboratories, University of Cambridge, UK. He was Head of the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Manchester,UK  and was Associate Dean for Teaching and Learning at the same University.

Tony Brown had a long industrial career before joining academia including starting Easat Antennas Ltd, now Easat Radar Systems Ltd, in 1987. He was variously Managing Director then Chairman  and is now  Chief Technical Consultant at the company

His research into antennas and propagation has resulted in 170 papers, five patents and has contributed to two books. He now concentrates on the application and measurement of electrically large broad band antennas  to radio astronomy instrumentation, radar and communications.

Tony has acted as Chairman for multiple international conferences including co-chairng the European Conference on Antennas and Propagation (EUCAP)conference in 2018.He is  a member of the UK research group on the  Squqre Kilometre Array radio telescope (since 2002) and is a previous chairman of the Wireless Friendly Building Group. Professor Brown served  served as a UK representative to the EU COST ASSIST action, on the EUROCAE WG-41 standards group and was a member of the Technical Advisory Commission to the FCC in Washington,DC.

Tony is a past Council memeber for the Engineering Professors Council, a Fellow of the IET and IMA and a Life Senior Menmber of the IEEE. He is a member of the steering comittee for the IET professional network on antennas and propagation, was a founder member of th EPSRC Communications College. He also is a degree acreditor for the IET.

Research

Research Interests:

My main interests are in antennas and propagation above 100MHz including  microwave and  miili-metric frequencies. In particular I now concentrate on broad band (multi-octave) phased arrays, shaped beam array and reflector antennas (including hybrid systems) and related computational electromagnetics.

One key area is the measurement and calibaration of large scale antennas using various techniques including antenna measurements by drone systems and their analysis.

In radar applications I focus on propagation effects in complex environments (such as wind farms) and on clutter effects in maritime surveillance radar.
