Design and Build Project

Every summer, our JP year 2 students spend two weeks in the campus to receive their professional training. They then form groups to work on a project that gives them experiences in design, development and team work. The aims of this Design & Build project are to train our students to:

  • solve engineering problems for yourselves
  • use your knowledge in practice
  • gain experience working in a group with students from other programmes
  • understand the work in different aspects of a design project

The project in 2020 was to design and build a musical keyboard. The basic requirements are as follows:

  • The keyboard should have at least 8 keys.
  • Simple melody can be played on the keyboard.
  • The keyboard has a LCD display (e.g. indicating notes)

The students were encouraged to implement advanced functions like delay, modulation, automatic playing, etc. Our students in Telecommunication programme contribute to this part of the project.

In addition to the hardware product, the group was also required to design and build a marketing & sales website with a supporting database. Students from our E-commerce and Internet of Things programmes can contribute with their computer science skills in this aspects.

Students' work is assessed by both our BUPT partners and our JP academics. The students present their work in English and demonstrate their products (i.e. hardware, websites, databases) to the judging panel.

The following are the advertisement videos produced by our outstanding groups for the 2020 project.
