This module provides an introduction to the principles of communications embracing fundamental concepts in communication systems, the transmission of information, computer networking, and the Internet.

Topics include:

  • Digital Communications and Networks: Data transmission, telecommunications networks and resource sharing, packet and circuit switched networks.
  • Internet Protocols and Applications: Internetworking systems and the history of the Internet.
  • The layered model of open communication systems: The OSI model and the Internet model, overview of each layer.
  • The Data link Layer: characteristics, protocols and services; Local area networks.
  • The Network Layer: characteristics, protocols and services; IPv4 and IPv6 protocols.
