Module code: ECS645U

Credits: 15
Semester: SEM2

This course is intended to equip you with a basic understanding of the components and operation of modern analogue and digital electronic communication systems: radio-frequency amplifiers, oscillators, filters, modulators and demodulators, etc.

Topics covered will include:

  • Introduction to microwave and millimetrewave communications systems
  • RF spectrum - Applications; Assigned radio bands; Atmospheric absorption bands
  • Recap of Microwave and millimetrewave structures and devices - Passive devices (lumped elements and transmission lines); Active devices (BJT, FET, etc)
  • Computer Aided Design (CAD)
  • Modulation and demodulation - AM, FM principles, Digital modulation, Modulation and demodulation circuits
  • Noise and nonlinear distortion
  • Active RF front-end components - Amplifiers; Mixers and oscillators; Phase locked loops, frequency synthesisers and automatic gain control
  • Microwave systems - Systems aspects of antennas; Link budget and margin; System noise
  • Digital communications systems - Digital transmitters and receivers.
