Semester: SEM2
This course is intended to equip you with a basic understanding of the components and operation of modern analogue and digital electronic communication systems: radio-frequency amplifiers, oscillators, filters, modulators and demodulators, etc.
Topics covered will include:
- Introduction to microwave and millimetrewave communications systems
- RF spectrum - Applications; Assigned radio bands; Atmospheric absorption bands
- Recap of Microwave and millimetrewave structures and devices - Passive devices (lumped elements and transmission lines); Active devices (BJT, FET, etc)
- Computer Aided Design (CAD)
- Modulation and demodulation - AM, FM principles, Digital modulation, Modulation and demodulation circuits
- Noise and nonlinear distortion
- Active RF front-end components - Amplifiers; Mixers and oscillators; Phase locked loops, frequency synthesisers and automatic gain control
- Microwave systems - Systems aspects of antennas; Link budget and margin; System noise
- Digital communications systems - Digital transmitters and receivers.
