Meet the DeepMind Scholars

Oishi Deb, Ambra Jin, Mariya Pavlova, Gina Sajith, and Raghad Zuraiki were selected to receive the DeepMind scholarship in 2020-2021 following a competitive selection process.

All five students pursued postgraduate studies in Artificial Intelligence and came to Queen Mary with a range of industry experience, excellent academic records, and a desire to explore the potential of AI technologies and learn important, industry-relevant skills in this area.  

Oishi Deb graduated with Software and Electronics Engineering with industry degree from the University of Leicester in 2017. She was awarded the Student of the Year award from the President and Vice-Chancellor of the University.

'After graduation, I worked at Rolls-Royce as a Software Engineer and was a runner-up in the UK Telegraph STEM award in the Power System category sponsored by Rolls-Royce in 2017. As a STEM ambassador, I promote STEM to the younger generation and was invited to participate at NATO’s Communication and Information Agency conference in Belgium, where I was a panellist for the session "Attracting Diverse Talent". I presented a poster at the WiML/NeurIPS conference in 2019 and through this DeepMind Scholarship Programme, I would like to get involved with further AI research work, particularly about applying AI to healthcare and for social good.'

Mariya Pavlova has a background in asset management and six years of experience as a fixed income analyst. She has worked for the largest companies in the industry where her focus was emerging markets and impact investing (ESG).

'ESG sparked my interest in artificial intelligence and pursuing such a degree. I am mostly looking forward to my dissertation project. My plan is to pioneer a score-based tool for evaluating companies' green credentials. I have been doing similar academic work as a research-assistant at the University of Cambridge. In my free time I am a keen runner and I also enjoy reading, opera & ballet, and art exhibitions.'

Raghad Zuraiki graduated from Queen Mary University of London in 2020 with a BSc in Mathematics. 

'When I arrived in England in November 2013 as a refugee from Syria, I was not only entering a new country with very limited English but also had missed a year of education due to the Syrian war. Fast forward six years, I am now fluent in English and I have progressed to become a confident woman with a record of academic excellence in Mathematics and a strong motivation to specialise in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence. 

Alongside my academic interest, I am a Professional Artist and I have participated in various Fine Art Exhibitions in London. 

I am very honoured to be one of the scholars as I truly believes this opportunity is going to not only expand my knowledge and help me pursue a specialism in AI, but also to contribute positively towards the technological developments that will change the way we live and help the disadvantaged countries through the use of AI.'

Gina Sajith completed a Biomedical engineering MEng at King’s College London and this is what cemented her interest in inventing and creating technology that can automatically problem solve, learn and carry out tasks that most humans cannot do without training.

'The AI department at Queen Mary has discussed the use of Game-AI to solve real-world issues and this is the sort of development and research that I want to delve into. 

I was a member of the Enactus KCL society for two years for the ongoing project Light mountain operating in Tanzania and this further cemented my desire to work in a field where I can aid people who are in need.' 

Ambra Jin is an Italian-born Chinese student who came to London to pursue her passion for science and technology. She has a masters in Biomedical Engineering MEng from King's College London.

'I joined this Artificial Intelligence MSc at Queen Mary University London to learn to use AI techniques to explore medical problems. Previously, I had the opportunity to work on neonatal neural networks. It sparked my interest in learning to understand how a computer comprehends too.

Through this program, I can't wait to gain as much knowledge and experience thanks to experts in the field. In my daily life, I always like to challenge myself. It doesn't need to be anything extraordinary, but I think pushing my limits helps me understand that we have no limits in what we can achieve.'
