Tell us about your work?

I started doing research 4 years ago, when I was still a master’s student. Back then, 5G wireless communication systems were the topic of the day. That’s why I worked on massive MIMO systems, and our team (in my master’s university) succeeded in publishing several papers in this area. As time went by, better and more practical structures were introduced beyond 5G telecommunications, which is why for my PhD studies, I decided to work on the development of systems beyond 5G telecommunication, specifically, intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS). In our work, we aim to address the design issues in IRS-aided systems, by using optimization techniques and artificial intelligence.

What’s the best thing about your work?

What we are trying to do in our project is very practical and implementable. Unlike the very complex structures in 5G that I used to work on, this design is simple and efficient, and perfectly does the job. But, in my opinion, the best thing about it is its novelty which makes it quite interesting, and as a result, the rate of publications in this field is pretty high. It feels like we are standing at the edge of technology and pushing forward.

What brought you to Queen Mary?

In my field of work, specifically, application of deep learning in beyond 5G telecommunications, Queen Mary is one of the leading universities in the UK. In addition to that, the research funds and opportunities here have made it easier for young researchers to dedicate 100% of their time and energy to research. Knowing all this, I found QMUL to be the perfect fit for me, and joined its doctoral program.

When not at EECS, what are your interests?

In my free time, I tend to work on my music and art. I play classic guitar, mostly I play pop songs and sometimes Flamenco music, and I am a painter. I used to paint nature scenes with watercolours rather professionally, but now I am teaching myself to draw portraits as well. In addition to that, I am a big fan of nature, so I go on hikes, I bike a lot in forests and I do Yoga and meditation outdoors. In my belief, it is essential for our mental health to learn new things in different areas, to be multi-dimensional rather than to always focus on one single thing. Hence, I do these different activities, which help me not only to have a healthier life-style, but also, to have a better performance when I am working on my projects.
