ECS724P/ECS724U Network Modeling and Performance

Module code: ECS724P/ECS724U

Credits: 15
Semester: SEM2

This module aims to provide you with knowledge of basic probabilistic and queueing theoretic techniques, plus the fundamentals and limitations of simulation modelling and how such knowledge can be exploited and applied in the design and configuration of traffic control mechanisms. The module is an introduction to the fundamental ideas in network science: graph theory, network metrics, network models, network robustness.

Topics covered include:

  • Introduction to the technologies of IP and ATM
  • Introduction to probability theory
  • Queueing theory for telecommunications
  • Traffic models and power law behaviour
  • Types of packet queueing
  • Traffic control
  • QOS and CoS mechanisms
  • Network measurement
  • Service level agreements
  • Fundamental ideas in network science: graph theory, network metrics, network models, network robustness.
